Pinnawala

The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is situated northwest of the town of Kegalle, halfway between the present capital Colombo and the ancient royal residence Kandy. It was established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Wildlife Department in a 25 acre coconut property adjoining the Maha Oya River. The orphanage was originally founded in order to afford care and protection to the many orphaned Elephants found in the jungles of Sri Lanka.
The pictorial village the world’s only elephant orphanage that cares for the largest elephant herd in captivity. It shelters many baby elephants, as well as a blind elephant and one crippled.The Sri Lankan species Elephas Maximus Maximus is the largest of the Asiatic elephant genus, and has patches with no skin color on its ears, face, trunk and belly. They are the darkest of all Asiatic elephants. Seeing this large herd of these behemoths is a great experience you can have on a Sri Lanka trip.In February 2011, the Elephant Orphanage of Pinnawela recorded the birth of the 55th baby elephant in its 40 year existence. The count stood at 86 with the latest addition.


Bible Rock

When you travel along Kandy road passing Kadugannawa area, look across the valley to witness a peculiar shaped rock at the distance. The shape reminds you of the famous rock fortress Sigiriya but it is in fact “Bathalegala” or “Bible Rock” as the British named it. As a child, It confused me enough to think it was Sigiriya until someone was kind enough to correct me.

Alagalla Mountain Range

Alagalla Mountain Range is situated at the boundaries of the Central and Sabaragamuwa Provinces in Sri Lanka. Along with the surrounding Bathalegala also known as Bible Rock, Uthuwankanda, Devanagala, Ambuluwawa, Knuckles Mountain Range and Hanthana Mountain Range.
Alagalla is one of the most popular hiking destinations in Sri Lanka . This mount range is situated in the boundaries of Kandy and Kegalle Districts. Alagalla mountain range is surrounded by Bathalegala alias Bible Rock, Uthuwankanda, Dewanagala, Ambuluwawa & Hanthana.

Pinnawala Zoo

Pinnawala Open Zoo is a zoological garden in Pinnawala, Sri Lanka, which is situated closer to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. The zoo was opened for public on 17 April 2015. This is the first open-air zoo in Sri Lanka and second zoo in Sri Lanka after Dehiwala zoo.
