Why you'll
love this trip

  • Visit Sigiriya's Lion Rock – a UNESCO World Heritage site – and if you’re game, climb the steps to the top for amazing views over the jungle.
  • Explore an area of Sri Lanka only recently opened to tourism – considered to be off-limits for years due to the civil war, the gates to Jaffna are now open to adventurers once more. Discover Tamil culture and see Point Pedro – Sri Lanka’s northernmost point.
  • Kick back in the sun on Trincomalee Beach’s bright and sandy shoreline. Enjoy the open skies, swaying palm trees and glittering waters, then stop by a local village to join the community in making a traditional Tamil meal.
  • Witness ritual and devotion in the spiritual heart of the country during a visit to Kandy’s Temple of the Tooth.
  • Observe wild elephants from basic tree houses and hopefully catch an outstanding sunset in Wasgamuwa National Park – one of the most biodiverse protected areas in Sri Lanka.

Itinerary

Greetings from sunny beach, Negombo's expansive coastline, and the evening group meeting in Sri Lanka.

Overnight: Negombo.

Following breakfast, we travel to Anuradhapura via the Negembo fish markets, stopping along the route to sample local toddy at a coconut plantation. Later in the evening, we enjoy street food and rock 'n roll.

Overnight : Anuradhapura.

There are numerous places to explore and experience the ancient site of Anuradhapura, the first capital of the Third Century. Twin ponds, elephant pond, moon stones, Jetavanaramaya stupas, Dagabas, and the boo tree, which has been alive for more than 230 years. In the late evening, we go to a Sri Lankan household to sample some local cuisine made with lake fish.

Overnight :Anuradhapura

Travel to Dambulla by public transportation Or a private transportation, then climb to the Dambulla Cave temple, which has over 150 statues, stunning views, and paintings inside the caverns, some of which date back to the first century BEC and others to the 18th and 19th centuries. Go to one of the local vegetable markets. Try a variety of cuisines at the hotel in the late evening.

Overnight : Dambulla

We proceed to Kandy, our final capital, which is located in the hills 500 meters above sea level, after having our Sri Lankan breakfast. We visit the spices garden en route to Matale, where we enjoy delectable local cuisine, the Kandy Temple of the Tooth, and a nighttime Kandyan dance performance.

Overnight : Kandy

We go to the most beautiful city in Kandy in the morning, which has a wide variety of markets for fruits, vegetables, fish, and other items. We visit the local markets in Kandy to observe what's going on there. Thereafter we will be visiting a women’s batik entrepreneurs work shop that we can take part. Our dinner will be with a local family knowing how to cook the string hoppers prepare and sample gravy curry in the Kandyan style.

Overnight : Kandy

After breakfast, visit the Kandy railway station to take in the most breathtaking train ride of your life. Beautiful scenery, mountains, waterfalls, and, if the weather permits, Adam's Peak. In the evening, we go to a Sinhalese family to enjoy Sri Lankan rice and curries in a variety of ways. Have you ever tasted Sri Lankan-style jack or brinjal?

Overnight : Haputale

Since tea is so well-known in Haputale Hill Country and is a part of our daily lives, why don't we visit a tea factory today to see how they make it and, if we get the chance, sample it too? After that, we return to the Tamil hamlet and join them for delicious Sri Lankan Tamil food. If the weather is fine, you might take a leisurely stroll about the tea estate in the late evening to digest. Otherwise, you enjoy a restful evening.

Overnight : Haputale

This is an exciting day for you because you will get to view the infant elephants, who range in age from one to seven, and see how they sip milk and have fun. Elephants are loved by all, but they all want to live in their homes. After that, make your way to Mirissa.

Overnight : Mirissa

Enjoy a day of relaxation, pick a time to learn about marine food, and sip drinks at the stunning beach.

Overnight : Mirissa

We view the stilt fisherman, visit the Galle fort, take a walk and experience the colonial atmosphere in Sri Lankan fashion, have lunch at Galle, and then drive to Colombo for an evening city tour after enjoying a pleasant day at Galle.

Overnight : Colombo

You can say goodbye to our nation in a variety of ways, but with a tear in your eye, you can bid it farewell for another trip filled with plenty of food.

Is this trip
right for you?

  • Jaffna has opened to tourism after being off-limits to visitors for the past 30 years, meaning it’s quieter, less developed and services and accommodation are not yet quite up to the same standard as the rest of the country.
  • Though its equatorial position means constant year-round temperatures, the summer months in Sri Lanka are very hot with short, sharp monsoons in the south-west of the country. Be sure to use adequate sun protection and drink plenty of water.

Important notes

1.Some Travellers have reported being approached by locals offering excursions before their Intrepid trip commences. This has been particularly prevalent in and around the hotels used by Intrepid. These guides are in no way connected to Intrepid and we cannot guarantee the safety or quality standards of their tours. We advise customers against joining any tour offered by the unauthorised guides.

2. A single supplement is available if you’d prefer not to share a room on this trip. The single supplement applies to all nights of your trip and is subject to availability. Please speak to your booking agent for further information.

3. The Perahera Festival is a 10 day period of evening processions to honour the Sacred Tooth, which is enshrined at Kandy's Temple of the Tooth. Each night features thousands of perfomers, including dancers, drummers, and a parade of more than 50 decorated elephants. Due to Intrepid's stance on elephant cruelty we do not visit the Perahera Festival and cannot purchase tickets on your behalf.

4. Please provide your full name exactly as per passport at the time of booking for train tickets. Fees may apply for amendments to details within 45 days of departure, and in some cases you will be required to cover the cost of issuing new tickets.

5. Train tickets are in very high demand. We always try our best to secure tickets, but if we cannot book them, you will continue your journey by private vehicle.
